Dealing with Sensitivity after Dental Crown Treatment

When tooth decay or dental damage has progressed to the point that it cannot be effectively treated with a dental filling, patients may require dental crown treatment. Dental crowns completely surround the crown of a tooth to restore its structure and provide added strength and protection.

Dental crown treatment is safe and minimally invasive, but it is likely to result in some minor side effects. If patients are dealing with heightened sensitivity after dental crown treatment at our San Antonio, TX, practice, River City Dental Solutions, our dentists can offer tips for alleviating the condition until discomfort subsides.

Is Sensitivity Normal after Dental Crown Treatment?

Sensitivity is a common side effect of dental crown treatment. During dental crown treatment, the tooth is reshaped to eliminate all damaged tooth material. When the tooth is reshaped, it is likely to expose deeper layers of the tooth structure that are closer to the sensitive nerves and tissues at its center. This can make the teeth more sensitive to extreme temperatures or pressure.

The gums may also be sensitive after dental crown treatment. Sometimes the soft tissues of the mouth are irritated by the dental cement that is used to bond a crown in place. The gums may also be more sensitive as they adjust to the crown. A dental crown is meant to fit comfortably, but it may take a little time for the gums to become accustomed to the position of the restoration.

How Long Will Sensitivity Last?

Sensitivity after dental crown treatment is usually short-lived. Most patients notice that sensitivity lasts for just a few days. Sensitivity should gradually improve within the first several days following dental crown treatment, and is likely to completely subside within a week.

If our San Antonio patients experience sensitivity for longer than a week, or if sensitivity does not seem to improve in the days following treatment, they should report it to our dentists. It may be necessary to adjust the dental crown to create a more comfortable fit.

Tips to Minimize Sensitivity

Sensitivity after dental crown treatment is usually fairly mild, so it should not be a big concern for most of our San Antonio patients. However, if sensitivity is bothersome or uncomfortable, there are some things that patients can try to minimize sensitivity:
