Reasons for Mini Dental Implant Failure
When adult tooth loss occurs, dental implants offer the most secure foundation for artificial teeth, whether in the form of dental crowns, a dental bridge, or dentures. However, dental implants treatment can be time consuming and costly. Mini dental implants offer a strong foundation for dentures and can adequately treat tooth loss in a fraction of the time of traditional implants. Mini implants are also more affordable than traditional implants, making them a great treatment option for many of our patients. It is important to note that the ultimate success of mini dental implants treatment is dependent on the jawbone fusing with the implants. Unfortunately, there are cases in which mini dental implant failure can occur for our San Antonio patients. What Leads to Mini Dental Implant Failure?
The majority of the time, mini dental implant treatment is a complete success for our patients. However, there are cases in which mini implants fail to fuse with the bone properly or simply do not offer adequate support for dental restorations. Dr. Perry takes a great deal of time thoroughly examining a patient’s mouth in order to determine if they are ideal dental implant candidates. He will also create a treatment plan that will best meet the patient’s unique needs and optimize the chances of successful treatment. Despite these precautions, mini dental implant failure does occur for a small group of patients. Below are some factors that may lead to mini dental implant failure:
- Too few implants placed: It is important that the appropriate number of mini implants be placed to adequately support dental restorations under the pressure of the patient’s bite.
- Poor bone density: Mini dental implants do not require as much bone density as traditional implants. Still, it is important to test bone density to be sure that there is adequate bone to support the mini dental implants.
- Excessive force: Although mini dental implants are strong, they should only be exposed to a reasonable amount of force. Patients who chronically clench or grind the teeth are more likely to experience mini dental implant failure and may, therefore, want to consider alternate restorative treatments, or treatments to address the bruxism.
- Poor oral hygiene: It is important to maintain the health of the teeth and gums once mini dental implants are in place. Mini dental implants cannot decay, but without regular brushing and flossing, the gums and jawbone can become damaged, leading to mini dental implant failure.
- Smoking during recovery: Smoking can be harmful during the recovery period from mini dental implant treatment. To promote healing, it is important that smoking be avoided until the mini implants have fused with the jawbone and recovery from treatment is complete.
