Realign Dentures to Perfect the Comfort and Appearance of Your Smile By Joseph Perry, DDS on December 30, 2014

Man with attractive, natural-looking denturesThe teeth perform a number of important functions. They are used for chewing and eating, and play an important role in speaking. In addition, they contribute to a healthy and beautiful looking smile. There is simply no reason to live with compromised oral function and a less attractive smile when there are so many dental treatment options. Dr. Joseph Perry is a dentures specialist, offering patients custom dentures that fit comfortably and restore a complete, healthy smile. Custom dentures are made using molds of the patient’s mouth so that a secure and comfortable fit can be obtained. However, over time, a patient’s mouth may change, thus compromising the fit of the dentures. Dr. Perry offers San Antonio patients dentures realignment so that they can once again enjoy an attractive smile that feels good and functions properly.

Why Is Realignment Necessary?

Many people tell stories of ill-fitting dentures that slip or fall out at the worst possible moment. A properly fitted set of denture can offer patients a great deal of security, as well as improved comfort. If dentures do not fit properly, their comfort, function, and aesthetics will be compromised. Unfortunately, dentures that once fit well may become loose or unsettled over time, thus requiring a realignment. A realignment to adjust and improve the fit of the dentures may be necessary in any of the following situations:

  • The patient experience significant weight loss or gain
  • The patient experiences water retention or swelling
  • An infection or irritation of the gums occurs
  • The base of the dentures deteriorate due to simple wear and tear
  • The mouth or gum line changes in shape over time

Most commonly, patients will require a realignment due to the changes in the gums and jawbone. As a result of tooth loss, the underlying jawbone slowly degenerates, which alters the shape of the alveolar ridge and gum tissue.

The Realignment Process

Denture realignment is a normal process that most dentures patients require every few years. This is a simple process that allows patients to retain their set of dentures while restoring a close, comfortable fit. A denture realignment involves making alterations to the base of the dentures. A new mold is taken of the mouth so that any changes in shape can be accounted for. The underside of the dentures is then shaved off and will be replaced with new plastic that will be realigned (based on the new molds) to fit the patient’s mouth. This properly realigns the dentures to the gum line and avoids the need for an expensive, new set of dentures.
